Evergreens

For the season 2020/21 the Evergreens ceased competing for Ealing Trailfinders and transferred to Ealing Trailfinders 1871. See new team details HERE.

The Evergreens is Ealing Rugby Club’s veterans side and is made up of players who are 35 years or over. Players are welcomed from all over and it is testimony to Ealing Rugby Club’s success that many recent members of the Evergreen squad have joined us from various West London teams to supplement our home-grown talent. Thus, we are a happy ship flying a flag of convenience for anybody wishing to play a good standard of rugby throughout their 30s, 40s, 50s and occasionally older.

This year we will be playing competitive matches in the Middlesex Vets League & Cup with games against clubs like Wasps, Chiswick and UCS Old Boys as well as friendlies against old foes London Irish.

We have simple objectives:

  • To provide an appropriate vehicle to keep players in the game
  • To encourage lapsed players to return to rugby (including players from other clubs who do not have a vets team)
  • To compete at the highest standard possible
  • To field a regular side
  • To play good, competitive rugby
  • To tour
  • To keep it fun

The recent history of the Ealing Evergreens has been a tale of success on the field, winning the Middlesex Vets Merit Table for the past two years. Add to that success on tour in Rome (and occasionally also in the bar), but most notably success in harmonising a mixed group of older players. Good players simply love to carry on playing rugby.

Long may the Ealing brand of veterans rugby continue as a key force in West London.

You are never too old to join us! A few of us still train as well so join us for a look: Men’s Section training on Tuesdays and Thursdays with prompt start at 19:30.

REPORT: Ealing Evergreens 34 – 0 Weybridge Vandals

Well done to all who played on Saturday, a good solid win (even if we did go off the boil for the second half), 34 unanswered points and to be fair they never really looked like troubling our line.  Well done to Paul L for his 140 metre, interception try, to our guest Greg Ward for his debut score and committed play by everyone.

REPORT: Ealing Evergreens 0 – 51 Richmond Heavies

Ealing Evergreens went down to a heavy home loss on Saturday losing 51 points to nil against Richmond Heavies.  The Ealing scrum was stuck in reverse gear all day, we won hardly any line out ball, conceded nine tries and scored none.  But apart from that Mrs Lincoln, how did you enjoy the show?

REPORT: Weybridge Vandals 19 – 34 Ealing Evergreens

Ealing Evergreens got back to winning ways on Saturday with a well deserved win away at Weybridge Vandals in the Surrey Vets League Division 1.  The injured players list gets longer every week and on Friday I was concerned about how we would field a full XV but we managed to actually have two subs and everyone who played was in their chosen position which was a huge problem for us in our last two games.

REPORT: Barnes Vets 61 -12 Ealing Evergreens

The Evergreens suffered their first loss of the season and oh what a loss!  I know many people would say why do a match report after a heavy loss?  Who wants to read about it?  What is there to say after shipping such a heavy defeat?  Actually there is quite a lot that can be said.  Mainly that rugby is a 15 man game and we cannot hope to be successful with so many of our regular backs missing and those remaining playing completely out of position.

REPORT: London Irish Bs 12 – 36 Ealing Evergreens

Friday night after work and instead of Happy Hour in the pub round the corner I’m heading to Gloucester Road to meet Ricky and head down to Sunbury for the annual friendly against London Irish Vets. This is a very popular fixture for Evergreens with so many of the squad having a connection with London Irish and such a strong Irish contingent in the Evergreens and Ealing in general.
