REPORT: Hammersmith & Fulham II 0 – 19 Ealing Cougars

Ealing Cougars recorded a comfortable 19 -0 win of Thames merit table opponents Hammersmith & Fulham on Saturday, they were rarely in trouble and took control of the game from the start.

Hammersmith & Fulham kicked off long and the ball fell to Federico Salcedo on the wing who charged the ball up from our 22 to past the halfway line beating four players. From the resulting ruck Ealing were awarded a penalty for Hammersmith & Fulham being offside which would be a constant feature of this game.

The first scrum was a telling part of the game as the Cougars drove Hammersmith & Fulham off their own ball for a turnover, the scrum was functioning very well with James "slim" Elliot in particular dominating his opposite number. Several more forward drives with resulting penalties for persistent offside saw Ealing with a line-out 10 yards out. the catch and drive resulted in Ash Spencer touching down. Ash Gillard added the conversion.

Another good spell of play saw the Cougars break the Hammersmith & Fulham backline with Christian Corrigan breaking through their backline only to be tackled on their 22 yard line. Hammersmith & Fulham were again penalised for killing the ball and as they retreated Oli Miller took a quick tap and ran at the heart of the defence, he managed to beat a couple of players before flicking the ball behind his back for Simone Falco to score under the posts for what was the try of the match.

The second half continued much as the first with the Cougars having most of the possession. The Hammersmith & Fulham defence was tough and resolute and thwarted most of the Cougars work causing a few handling errors and turnovers. Ealing Cougars struggled to deal with this and it was evident that not playing since December the 18th was having an affect on their fitness.

it wasn’t until the last five minutes of the game that the Cougars finally put the game beyond doubt with a great solo try on the blindside from Federico who had been a handful all game and deserved his score as well as man of the match for his performance.
