Terry Fights for a Good Cause

Terry will climb into the ring at York Hall, Bethnall Green on 3rd June to compete against fighters from Premiership clubs such as Harlequins, London Irish and Saracens, as well as local rivals Richmond and London Scottish, in the Touraid Fight Night. An event that aims to raise much-needed cash for the charity which helps disadvantaged children to participate in sport overseas.

Here, Terry reminds us of his distinguished service to the club, and provides the lowdown on why he’s getting involved in Touraid Fight Night

Terry at Ealing

“I’ve played rugby at Ealing since the age of 15, which means I’ve been a member of the club for 27 years. I had stints playing at Osterley and Wasps but Ealing has always been my club, and in my heart.

“I’ve played for every team at Ealing at one stage or other, but my best moments were playing for the 1st XV from the age of 20, playing in National League 4 South as it was then (now National League Two South), appearing in my last 1st team game at the age of 35.

“I have enjoyed playing rugby at all levels for Ealing, taking part in five Middlesex Cup finals (winning four of them) and in my debut campaign in the 1st team I scored 30 tries, as the side notched a club record 1000-point season.

“However, my proudest moments came representing Ealing in the famous Middlesex Sevens at Twickenham, where I was fortunate to score a try on the hallowed turf, ably set up by Clive "Jive" Whitton – probably the only time he’s ever passed me the ball, thanks Clive!

The Day Job

Terry Thompson Text Wrap“During the week I work as an IT Consultant for SunGard, near Heathrow. It’s a good company to work for with a lot of nice people, hopefully some of whom will be turning up to support me in this great event, or more likely to see me get my head punched in to shut me up for a few seconds! Still, all good as long as it’s for a good cause!!

Why Fight?

“The reason I’m doing this? Well, those of you that know me are aware that apart from being a big Ealing man I am a boxing fanatic. I love to watch fights of any type and have been out to Las Vegas a couple of times to watch Ricky Hatton. My all-time sporting idol is the one and only Muhammad Ali. It’s a real thrill for me to be able to represent Ealing once again, and it’s a bonus that it’s for a very good cause.

“Being a boxing fan, I’ve always wondered what it would be like to fight in front of a big crowd and hopefully here I’ll get my chance. It’s a real honour to be able to give something back to Ealing, help with this great charity and give my club some good positive press. I’ll be trying my hardest to make them proud.

The Hard Slog

“Training starts in February and it’s going to be very hard and demanding on my old body, but I’m looking forward to finding out if I’ve got what it takes. Thanks to all those guys who’ve given me support and even the ones that have just laughed at me! I’ll be doing my best to make you proud, or prove you wrong! It’s a great event and I hope you’ll all get down there to support me. Would be great to see you all there shouting my name, or booing me…whatever you feel. My great wish is to enter the ring with my now adopted (stolen) Ricky Hatton song:

There’s only one Terry Thompson
One Terry Thompson
Walking along , singing a song
Walking in a Thompson wonderland

Bring it on!!!
